According to various reports, more than five children die as a result of abuse or neglect each day. On average, a child abuse case is reported every 10 seconds, and approximately 3.3 million child abuse reports are filed every year. Many other such instances go unreported; the number of children afflicted by some form of abuse is shocking, especially girl child abuse. Urgent action needs to be taken on many levels that align with child abuse prevention, beginning with oneself.

Here are a few child abuse prevention guidelines that will gauge their outlook towards children better, be it a parent, teacher, relative, or even a neighbour.

a) One must never discipline a child when furious as behaviours may be uncontrolled.

b) One must actively participate in one's child's activities and get to know his/her child's friends, social group, teachers, etc.

c) One mustn't leave a child unattended.

d) One must encourage a child to voice any concerns they may have aptly. This guideline is most poignant for child abuse prevention.

e) One must always question a child's discomfort around a person; for example, when a child tells you that he or she doesn't want to be with a person, it could be a red flag.

f) One must listen to a child and believe what they have to say.

g) One must be aware of changes in a child's behavior or attitude and inquire about it.

h) One must teach their child what to do if they are separated from their family or home.

g) One must teach a child the correct names of his/her body's private parts.

i) One must be alert and aware of any term or talk that reveals premature sexual understanding.

j) One must pay equal attention to someone when they show greater interest in a child.

k) One must ensure that a child, at school, or daycare, should be released to the parent of the official designated.

Long-term effects of child abuse and neglect have an immense impact on a child's physical, mental, and behavioural health, which is why it is crucial to provide quality primary prevention programmes and services. To ensure child abuse prevention, communities should emphasize their vital role in this regard through early intervention services, and collaborated association, and acknowledgment that all parents and families need support.
